 The Slovenian Organising Committee

The efsli 2013 AGM and conference will be hosted by the Slovenian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (ZTSZJ) from 13th to 15th September in Ljubljana, Slovenia. The theme of the conference is “TECHNOLOGY vs. INTERPRETER: support or replacement?”
We live in a time of modern technology, which is rapidly developing in leaps and bounds. It allows us to progress and brings us new possibilities to improve our daily lives with quicker and easier communication. Information is accessible on all sides, wherever and whenever we need it.
Modern technology provides us a great deal of convenience. But does technology provide the support that it appears to, for sign language interpreters and for users of interpreting services? Do sign language interpreters feel they cannot improve, that they have reached their limits or that they are obsolete like out of date software? Or do interpreters think in terms of daily updates and developing new versions with greater utility and capacity? Perhaps from technology comes the support that interpreters need and there is not any need to fear it as replacing humans.
If that is the present day, what can we expect from the future? At the 2013 efsli Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia, we will discuss the following questions amongst others:
  • Can modern technology replace or substitute the need for sign language interpreters?
  • What ways can modern technology support and be of benefit to sign language interpreters and their service users?
  • To what issues must interpreters pay attention, to avoid finding ourselves caught in the web of modern technology?
  • What kind of service could users expect via modern technology and how will technological developments affect the work of interpreters?
  • How can interpreters, services users, educators and agencies cooperate in order to provide the best interpreting services through modern technology?
We are looking forward to exploring the topic of ‘Technology vs. Interpreter: support or replacement’ with you at the efsli conference in Slovenia in 2013.
