efsli 2011 AGM & conference

ANIOS, the Italian Association of Sign Language Interpreters, is honoured to host the efsli AGM and  Conference on 16 - 18th of September 2011.

The conference venue is the Lloyd’s Baia Hotel in Vietri sul Mare (SALERNO), a small, typical sea village on the enchanting Amalfi Coast. The hotel, situated on a rock directly overlooking the sea, is fifteen minutes by bus from the railway station of Salerno.

The topic of the conference is “Sight Translation - Sight Interpreting - Meeting at the Cross Modes",  Sign language interpreters as translators.
Translating and interpreting are two different skills which have common a denominator: passing from one language to another and from one culture to another. But these two skills are different in the mode of expression because in interpreting we have the meeting of two spoken languages, in translation, the languages may both be written or one is spoken and the other is written or in the case of sign language interpreters one may be written and the other a sign language.

In our working world, translating from sign language to a written language and vice versa, is a recent development which involves both deaf and hearing interpreters when working with subtitles, news or parts of books are translated, or a video text became a sign speech or in everyday correspondence.

This conference encourages participants to reflect on this development, to share experiences and will bring interpreter’s knowledge and expertise of specific translating techniques working between the written and sign language - “meeting of two languages and two modes”.
You will spend your time days in a magical atmosphere in the sun and sea and tasting the typical Mediterranean aromas and flavours.
We look forward to welcoming you to Salerno on 2011 to enjoy charming night excursions with fruitful morning work.
