efsli summer school 2008: 1 - 5 July 2008

After the great success of efsli English for Interpreters Course held in Prague (Czech Republic) in 2006, the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (efsli) is happy to announce another course targeted to professional Sign Language Interpreters, non native speakers of English, who would like to develop their interpreting skills into and out of Spoken English and a Signed Language. Two training sessions are scheduled: the first part (July 1-2, 2008) will be the repetition of the 2006 course, while the second part (July, 4-5, 2008) has been designed as an advanced/follow-up training. In between the two classes, one day off.

Who is the course targeted to?

  • Part 1 is aimed at those with little experience of working to and from English
  • Part 2 is for those with some experience of working to and from English.

We recommend to attend the course with colleagues from your own country to share the experience.

Language

The course will be delivered in spoken English. 
Any participants who require interpreters or another communication support system will be responsible for providing this themselves.

Aims – First part of the course

To develop awareness and understanding of the key skills underpinning working between spoken English and a Sign Language in dialogue and interactive settings.

Objectives

  • To develop strategies and techniques to effectively prepare for an interpreting assignment.
  • To understand the need for glossaries and dictionary work   
  • To explore the dynamics of interactive settings
  • To extend and enhance interpreting strategies for working at a discourse level.
  • To develop skills in using linguistic and interpreting research information to improve self- reflection
  • To develop and practice analytical skills.
  • To develop and practice interpreting skills.
  • To develop co-working skills within this context.
  • To practice giving and receiving feedback between peers.

 
Practical work

  • Brainstorming and mindmapping
  • Working with business papers, agendas, etc.
  • Practising spoken English in meetings
  • Interpreting consecutively and simultaneous in dialogues
  • Interpreting consecutively and simultaneous in meetings

Aims – Second part of the course

To develop awareness and understanding of the key skills underpinning working between spoken English and a Sign Language in monologue and conference settings.

Objectives

  • To develop strategies and techniques to effectively prepare for an interpreting assignment.
  • To understand the need for glossaries and dictionary work
  • To explore the dynamics of conference like settings
  • To extend and enhance interpreting strategies for working at a discourse level.
  • To develop skills in using linguistic and interpreting research information to improve self- reflection
  • To develop and practice analytical skills.
  • To develop and practice interpreting skills.
  • To develop co-working skills within this context.
  • To practice giving and receiving feedback between peers.

 
Practical work

  • Brainstorming and mindmapping
  • Working with conference papers, programmes, etc.
  • Practising spoken English for presentations
  • Interpreting monologues simultaneously into a signed language
  • Interpreting conference presentations simultaneously into English
  • Reviewing their current practice

We strongly suggest to register early. There is a maximum number of participants and places are allocated on a first come first served basis.
