EFSLI SPRING SCHOOL IN MALTA
Marinella Salami – Head of efsli Training Department
Starting from this year, efsli has increased the number of its training opportunities. Along with the traditional efsli summer school, for the first time ever efsli organised a spring school in the beautiful island of Malta. The training location was not chosen at random. In Malta, as in many other countries, sign language interpreting is a fairly new profession. efsli can help and support colleagues all over Europe in many ways. Offering a training course is one of those.
Our choice proved to be successful. 12 highly-motivated interpreters from Malta, Finland, Germany, Denmark and Greece attended efsli spring school in the charming town of Sliema. Kyra Pollitt from the UK was our trainer. She was appointed after a new procedure of selection worked out by the efsli Board and applied for the first time to efsli spring school.
The training theme “Understanding Deaf Culture – The interpreting process of visual information/interpreting skills and strategies” was picked up by our Maltese colleagues as we wanted a topic that could meet their learning needs and be linked to a training area of their interest.
Participants evaluated the course positively and with high marks of satisfaction. An effective stimulus for efsli to go on along this path and look forward to the work ahead to improve the quality of efsli Training Department.
Our sincere thanks to Rita, Sharon, Britta, Jenni, Graziella, Maria D., Peter, Flora, Maria A., Alison, Damaris, Kristjana and Kyra for making efsli spring school 2009 so special!
