1) What is the efsli Spring school 2012 about?

efsli Spring school's theme is 'Interpreting in Legal Settings'
Training will take place in Thessaloniki, Greece.
Further details about the training venue will be given to registered participants.

Training will take place if the required minimum number of participants have registered.

IMPORTANT:
Your place on the course will be confirmed by email at the latest by 5 April 2012. Please do not book your accommodation and flight until your place on the course has been confirmed. Selection of participants will be made according to the 'first in first served' system.

TRAINING SCHEDULE:
Friday 4th May 2012 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm
Saturday 5th May 2012 from 9:30 am to 5:00pm
Sunday 6th May 2012 from 9:00am to 12:00am

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Participants should be already qualified or certified (if applicable) as interpreters, have at least 3 years of interpreting experience and at least 40 hours of experience interpreting in legal settings.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The learning objectives for this training are designed to increase or improve the following:

  • participants' specific knowledge in interpreting in the legal setting through involvement in lecture, discussion and practice. Participants will discuss and describe best practices in legal interpreting.
  • participants' specific knowledge in preparation for interpreting in the legal setting through involvement in lecture, discussion and practice preparing for interpreting legal assignments individually and in teams.
  • participants' specific knowledge regarding ethical conflicts and general ethics in the legal setting through involvement in lecture, discussion and practice. Participants will determine and apply effective strategies to avoid and resolve ethical conflicts and challenges.
  • participants' comprehension of course material through practical application of theoretical frameworks and readings. Participants will discuss actual and potential challenges (e.g., linguistic, sociolinguistic and physical challenges) while working in the legal setting and determine strategies and tactics for self-selection and solutions to such challenges. Participants will be provided with and create case studies and scenarios for practice and discussion.
  • competence and confidence in working in legal settings

A detailed programme will be handed out to registered participants.

2) Who is the trainer?

The trainer is Sharon Neumann Solow (USA).
Sharon Neumann Solow, MA, CSC, SC:L has been a working interpreter for 45 years in ASL, English and International Sign. She is the author of two books, many professional articles, curricula and manuals. She has travelled around the globe as an interpreter, coordinator, performer, lecturer, and consultant. Through the Monterey Institute of International Studies, she also has been involved in the education of spoken language interpreters and interpreter educators.
She co-stars with her husband on the Emmy award-nominated NBC Knowledge series, "Say It With Sign," still airing throughout the United States.
Sharon received the 1987 (American) National Virginia Hughes Award, the 2005 President's Choice Award from NAOBI, the 2005 President's Award from RID, and the 2010 Mary Stotler Award from RID and CIT.

3) Communication at efsli Spring school 2012

The school will be taught in spoken English.
Correspondence with efsli and official documents will be in English.

4) How much does it cost?

  • Early Bird - registration (+ payment) deadline is 20 February 2012
     
  • efsli individual member: 280,00 euros
  • non efsli individual member: 560,00 euros

Regular: after 20th February 2012

  • efsli individual member: 330 euros
  • non efsli individual member: 660 euros

Individual membership is open to Sign Language Interpreters within Europe and other interested persons who subscribe to the aim and objectives of efsli.
Sign language interpreters who are members of National Associations (full members of efsli) are not automatically individual efsli members. You can become an individual member here:

The registration fee includes tuition, coffee breaks and course material. Participants will have to arrange for their own accommodation and flight.

6) I want to cancel my registration. Can I get a refund?

Cancellations must be send by email to marinella.salami@efsli.org and need to be confirmed by efsli Please contact the training department for further details.
If your cancellation is received:

  • before 20 February 2012: 50% refund minus bank transfer fee
  • from 20 February - 1 April 2012: 25% refund minus bank transfer fee
  • after 1 April 2012: no refund

Changes in registration: 50 Euro (will be applied if you decide not to cancel your registration but send someone else instead of you).
