efsli Summer School 2010 has been organised by the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters in cooperation with the Siena School for Liberal Arts.
The theme was Working in International Settings with a focus on conference interpreting. The first part was aimed at beginners (interpreters with little experience of working in international settings). Some of the topics discussed:
types of international conference settings today, history of the development of IS and national language interpreting in international conferences, Deaf Consumers perspective, ethical issues, adjustments from a national to the international setting, International protocols, constraints and many more.
The second part was aimed at interpreters who have experience of working in international settings. Topics discussed:
Deaf Consumers perspective, ethical issues, adjustments from a national to the international setting, International protocols, constraints, dealing with accents in the source language, teaming with other SL interpreters and with spoken language interpreters, techniques of working with DIs and many more.
Two trainers delivered the training programme together:
During the second part of the training a demonstration of working with Deaf Interpreters has been presented by the Hogeschool Utrecht University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands) as part of the IISE project.
All teaching and group work was in International Sign. The “hands on practice” has been done either in the National Sign Languages or in Intenational Sign.
