EUMASLI- European Master in Sign Language Interpreting

EUMASLI is a three-year project that aims at developing and piloting an innovative joint European Master’s degree programme in Sign Language Interpreting. The project started in October 2006 and is funded under the EU Socrates Programme 2006 within the Erasmus scheme for curriculum development.

The programme to be developed will qualify participants for research, development, and management functions in the area of sign language interpreting in their respective countries. The programme is thus intended to contribute to the development of the professional field of interpreting between deaf and hearing people in Europe.

The programme is developed and implemented by the three participating institutions on the basis of previous experience with the academic training of sign language interpreters. It draws upon the strength of existing European partnerships, bringing together differing traditions in the development of professional sign language interpreting in Europe.

The three participating institutions are:
Germany (co-ordinating institution)www.hs-magdeburg.de
Helsinki & Kuopio, Finlandwww.humak.fi
Edinburgh, Scotlandwww.hw.ac.uk

Following a period of development and liaison with stakeholders, the Master’s programme will be offered on a part-time basis including elements of blended learning from early 2009 onwards. The programme will be based on 90 ECTS-credits to be acquired over a period of 2.5 years. Participants will be expected to have a first degree as well as professional experience as sign language interpreters. Participation in the programme will include learning experience in all of the three participating countries.

We welcome comments, questions, suggestions and expressions of interest in the programme! Please write to the project coordinator Jens Hessmann at  (Magdeburg, Germany).
