I remember the day when I got the information that SAF chose me for participation at the EFSLI conference. I was terrified. Me? Italy? My broken English and a huge conference with sign language interpreters all over the world? No it’s not for me. As it turned out, all my fears were completely unfounded.
This year EFSLI conference was for me and two other participants from the Association of Polish Sign Language Interpreters a real turning point. For the first time I had had the honor to take part in such an inspiring event, for the first time Poland was represented by three participants, including the first Deaf delegate. Two of us could be a part of the conference thanks to SAF.
As I mentioned earlier, it was my first international conference, so I was a little bit scared about it. Fortunately, all my fears were ungrounded, because other interpreters seemed to be open-minded and cheerful people. I have found a new friends, got the information about Deaf community and sign languages from other countries. I had a chance to exchange my views and experience with other sign languages interpreters. But the most important was for me the informal, friendly and simply warm atmosphere of chats and meetings.
I must mention about the organization of the conference. It was fully professional, plus excellent views (seaside), delicious meals, and a very luxurious hotel included.
Lecture speakers focused on the issue of Sight Translation. The theme, which in our environment, is either talked about very little, or not talked about at all. I am glad that the speakers presented this issue in such a comprehensive way. The lectures were very interesting and clear. They made me realize the complexity of the Sight Translation process.
The next conference is in a year, I cannot miss it.
Once again my deep thanks to SAF and Yvonne for their support.
Thank you very much for everything!
Marcin Ruszczyk,
efsli SAF 2011 applicant
Thank you for the possibility to take part in Efsli conference!
I was told about Efsli conference by my colleague, who offered me to take a part in SAF. I did not expected to be chosen, as my application was sent on the last day of term.
I am very glad that SAF offered me a possibility to gain a useful experience outside Lithuania. I was surprised that language barrier was not the reason for me not to communicate with representatives of different countries and to share our experience with each other. The topic of the conference met my expectations. Such topics as „Deaf interpreter“ and „interpretation of poetry“ impressed me the most. Back to my country I was glad to share my experience with my colleagues from the center of interpreters in Vilnius. Conference photos and report are placed on web page of the center.
Efsli and AGM made a strong impression to me; it encouraged me to share my professional experience and to keep close relationships with deaf community.
Take part, gain experience and share it!
We were super excited to attend this year’s efsli event! Even though, it wasn’t the first time for interpreters from Serbia to attend the efsli AGM & Conference, it was our first time as AGM delegates! We were so nervous, but also, very happy, and very proud of that. Of course, none of that would happen without the support we got by applying to the SAF. Thank you!
Attending this year’s efsli event was important for us in many ways. First of all, we gained the experience that is valuable for our, recently founded, national association of SLI. Starting from the AGM, and then through the Conference, we were able to see and hear many things we, unfortunately, can not see or hear in Serbia. The theme of the Conference was very, very interested, and very useful, because that is the “issue” we are currently experiencing in our country. So, we could say that we were at the right place at the right time.
Both Ana and I will do our best to share all the experience and information we got at efsli. We have already sent verbose reports to our colleagues from Serbian Association of Sign Language Interpreters, and we are preparing big presentation of everything we heard at efsli that is going to take place in November.
Since Vienna is only couple of hundreds of kilometers far from our hometown, Novi Sad, we are looking forward to seeing you again next year! Thank you, one more time, to the SAF for making our participation at the efsli event possible!!!
